DEVOTION ~ EATING THE SHOWBREAD

Theme: Eating the Showbread

Text: Mark 2:25&26

25 But He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him: 26 how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?”

In yesterday's devotion, we learned that the Sabbath was intended to draw people closer to God than to satisfy human legalities. Today's text gave a true example of what is required of us in obedience to God's law. Jesus made reference to David eating the showbread meant for the priest and giving some to his companions. The showbread also known to be called the bread of the Tabernacle or hallowed bread, is a bread with specific instructions dedicated purposely for the Levite priests in Leviticus twenty-four verses five to nine. However, the priest served it to David and his companions when they were hungry because they had kept themselves pure before God. The focus was not on their titles but rather on their established relationship with God. The showbread must be eaten in purity not to gratify any human standard. Therefore, the laws of God cannot be fully followed if God's intent is not emphasized. What Ahimelech the priest did for David and his companions is an act of love that we must all emulate to seek to save lives rather than suppressing them to death.

PRAYER: Almighty God, I desire Your mercy and ask that my sins be forgiven for not being faithful to You and Your laws, neglecting the needs of my brothers and sisters, and walking in my selfish path of destruction. Come Holy Spirit please make Your home in me so that my life shall reflect the true nature of God. This I ask in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
