CHARACTER STUDY ~ JABEZ
Jabez means sorrowful or born in pain. He was named by his mother out of the circumstances surrounding his birth when she said he shall be called Jabez because “I gave birth to him in pain.” He, however, asked God to change the situation in his favour and God honored his request. Some Characteristics of Jabez: √ He is from the clans of Judah. √ He was born in pain and named to that effect. √ He was a man of prayer and trusted the God of his ancestors (the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) to help change his situation for good. √ His prayer is of significance to the Christian faith: “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” • We ought to pray for the blessings of God over our lives and not envy others in any way.
