CHARACTER STUDY ~ THE PROPHET NATHAN

The name Nathan is of Hebrew origin which means “given,” "he gave," and "gift of God,". There are two people named Nathan in the Bible; the prophet of God and one of the sons of David by Bathsheba. Our study today shall focus on the former. He was a prophet in the reign of King David and played a significant role in transforming the king.

Some Characteristics of the Prophet Nathan:

✔ Nathan delivered the Lord's message to David concerning his desire to build a temple for the Lord. When King David decided to build a temple for the Lord he confided in the prophet who gave the go-ahead but later God spoke to him to tell David one of his sons would rather build it. It is sometimes difficult to give a contrary opinion after giving someone full support on an agenda. However, this never deterred the prophet Nathan from relaying the message of God to the king.

✔ Nathan reproves David for his adultery with Bathsheba and his murder of Uriah. The prophet Nathan used a tactical means to convey the message of King David's secret sin to him. Nathan uses a story to illustrate the seriousness of David’s sin, and it’s effective in calling David to repentance. We must also learn to be mindful of how we convey messages to others. Wisdom must be applied to avoid aggravating issues rather than leading a sinner to penitence.

✔ The prophet Nathan gave Solomon the Name Jedidiah. Names have a lasting impact on people therefore, it is important to hear from God before giving names to people. Nathan received the name Jedidiah from God, not his own intuition.

✔ The prophet Nathan played a significant role in securing the throne for Solomon. He assisted Bathsheba in employing a good strategy to communicate the act of Adonijah to make himself king instead of Solomon. The strategy worked out perfectly and Solomon was enthroned as King.

✔ The prophet Nathan anointed Solomon as King over Israel and Judah. We must pursue the purpose of God for our lives and that of others.

✔ The prophet Nathan was named amongst those who kept the chronicles. He wrote about the acts of King David. Record keeping is of essence and we ought to develop it in all spheres of our lives.

✔ Nathan assisted King David in the organization of the Tabernacle. Nathan the prophet with King David, and  Gad the king’s seer, stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, stringed instruments, and harps according to the commandments of the Lord by His prophets.
