DEVOTION

Theme: The Emmaus Encounter
Text: Luke 24:28-35

28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.
30 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.

After the resurrection of Christ, a lot of issues which were unclear to some of His disciples made them to depart from the very place they were to stay in oder to be empowered. However as Cleopas and the other disciple were leaving for Emmaus, they encountered Jesus who had to refreshing their minds on the fact about Himself starting from Moses to the prophets (Luke 24:13-27).

While they walk with the Lord, they were not spiritually conscious of His presence. Dear beloved in Christ, going to church, being active in the house of God, studying of the Bible and other works in the vineyard is not enough if Christ has no place in your heart. The road to Emmaus gives us an understanding of how we  will be empty if Christ isn't welcomed into our hearts. Christ said, I stand at the door knocking, anyone who opens it to me, I'll come in and dine with him and he with Me (Revelations 3:20). If the disciples had not invited Him to stay with them because it was getting late, they would have missed knowing who it is they were walking with. It was as He dine with them that their eyes were opened and they knew Him. Christ is very close to you, but the worries of life is really not giving you the chance to see Jesus. Is time to invite Him in to dine with you.

When Christ comes your way, your fears are taken away and new strength comes upon you to do exploit. Walking seven miles and just when they're about to settle, they encountered Jesus and immediately, they return to Jerusalem (another seven miles journey). This tells you the joy of the Lord is our strength. Their testimony of the risen Christ proves indeed Mary Magdalene, the other women and Simeon were right that the Saviour is alive. You have a role to play to tell the world Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Prayer: Dear God, open the eyes of my understanding to see the risen Christ and help me to tell the world, my Saviour is risen indeed. In Jesus' name I pray. AMEN!
