CHARACTER STUDY ~ APOLLOS
Apollos means "one who destroys or a destroyer". He was a New Testament figure who steadily grew to become a servant of Jesus through ministry. He was a staunch Jew.
Some Characteristics of Apollos:
√ Apollos was endowed with great knowledge and was very outspoken. In his line of ministry, he exhibited understanding of the old canon and delivered its message boldly.
√ Despite Apollos's eloquence and knowledge, he was only vexed in the baptism of John without the knowledge that the prophecy about the Messiah had already been fulfilled. John’s baptism was the baptism unto repentance: An act of confession and turning from sin which anticipated the coming of the Messiah. Let us be informed that Christ's second return is for judgment.
√ Apollos was instructed in the way of Christ by Priscilla and Aquila, two faithful couples in Christ. After one of his public teachings, he was called aside by the couple who explained the scripture to him. His submissiveness to adhere to the teaching helped him greatly. Let us learn to accept criticism and embrace truth.
√ Apollos watered the church in Corinth. The apostle Paul preached the news and left; later, Apollos came to buttress the points they had heard early on. This is made known in one of Paul's epistles to the church in Corinth, not to be divided between Paul and Apollos, because God gives the harvest of soul-winning.
√ Apollos declined Paul's advice to go to Corinth to encourage the brethren there. His reason for objecting wasn't stated, but he made a promise to visit them later, which he did. We must be united not only physically but also spiritually to ensure we are going the same direction as the Holy Spirit desires.
√ There's no record of Apollos' death in the Bible, although it could be found in other religious literature.
