DEVOTION ~ THE NEW COVENANT
Theme: The New Covenant
Text: Jeremiah 31:31-34
31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
The Lord had covenant with Abraham and his descendants to make them a great nation. In Egypt, the Lord led them out and guided them until they enter the land of promise. The life the people were to lived, they didn't lived by that but did the contrary. The Lord assured a new covenant and this new covenant is sealed in Christ Jesus. In this covenant, Christ is the bridegroom and the church is His bride. This covenant has no limitation as both the Jews and Gentiles have access to this if they believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal Saviour.
The Lord as well outlined how the new covenant will function: "But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Anyone who comes to Christ is a new creation, transformed to have the mind of Christ through learning of the scripture inspired by the Holy Spirit. Jesus made know this new covenant at the well when the Samaritan woman encountered Him In John 4:5-30. This new covenant was made know when the woman, tried to establish a covenant that has been limited by the Jews. Jesus therefore replied her that; "21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
24God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth (John 4:21-24).”
Indeed God's Word dwells in our hearts and mind so long as the Holy Spirit stays in us. We are His people and He is our God. Our confessions now is channeled through Jesus and not mortal priests who in themselves are sinful. God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins if we confess them to Him (1 John 1:8-10). God knows what He was saying at that dispensation and what's His plans for humanity in our days concerning the new covenant. In the new covenant, our sins are wiped clean in the Blood of Jesus, you're a branch of the vine. Bear the good fruit of the Vine and do not withdraw yourself from this new covenant in Christ Jesus.
Prayer: Covenant keeping God, You're God from the beginning even unto the future. I thank You for Your faithfulness in keeping to Your covenants. Help me to also serve You faithfully. I pray the benefits of the new covenant. Put Your law in my mind and write them on my heart. Be my God and let me be Your child. Give me knowledge, wisdom and understanding of Your Word even now and forevermore in Jesus' name have I prayed. AMEN!
