DEVOTION ~ REPENT NOW
Theme: Repent Now
Text: Jeremiah 35:12-16
12 Then came the word of the Lord to Jeremiah, saying, 13 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, “Will you not receive instruction to obey My words?” says the Lord. 14 “The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, which he commanded his sons, not to drink wine, are performed; for to this day they drink none, and obey their father’s commandment. But although I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, you did not obey Me. 15 I have also sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, ‘Turn now everyone from his evil way, amend your doings, and do not go after other gods to serve them; then you will dwell in the land which I have given you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear, nor obeyed Me. 16 Surely the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them, but this people has not obeyed Me.” ’
A loving God calls on us to draw near to Him. However our evil deeds are keeping us back and we are unable to enjoy the goodness of the Lord. In the dispensation of the prophet Jeremiah, God sent message to His nation to do away with the idols they've made for themselves and return to Him. Unfortunately, they failed to heed to God's call. Many of us are guilty of this as well in our days.
Obedience to God's Word is key to being faithful. The Rechabites proofed that, nothing can make them go contrary to the instructions of their fathers. As children of God, do we also have the desire and will power not to go contrary to God's instructions? The best way to demonstrate this is in love. If we love God, then we can keep to His instruction. While on earth, we have the previleage to confess our sins and be forgiven but that can't be possible when we die.
Dear beloved in the Lord, when God's Word comes to us, we need to act now (vs 15). No one knows the time his/her life will be required of him/her. Each moment must be lived as though it's the last on earth. Do what pleases the Lord. If there's something to confess, do well to confess and repent.
Prayer: Gracious Father, forgive me for not heeding to Your instructions in life. Teach me O Lord to be obedient to every Word of Yours as a go about my duties. Holy Spirit divine lead and teach me to walk in God's will at all times. This I ask in Jesus' name. AMEN!
