DEVOTION ~ ADULTERY IN THE HEART
Theme: Adultery in the Heart
Text: Matthew 5:27-30
27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
In today's devotion, we will be looking at, adultery in the heart. Sin does not just happens, it is conceived within the heart and mind, and then given birth to by manifestation or action. The seventh commandment reads, "You shall not commit adultery." Adultery is the sin of having sexual relationship with another person other than your spouse (husband/wife). This can be said to be sexual relationship outside marriage but if the unmarried commits such sin, then it is fornication. (Exodus 20:14; James 1:14&15)
The text for consideration is the very words of Jesus Christ that, the act of adultery begins with lustful eyes that sends unhealthy thoughts to the mind and heart. Job in all his affliction made a profound statement that would guide each one of us in life; Job 31:1 ~ “I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman?" In our dispensation, we have made a covenant with God through Christ Jesus, we ought to keep it faithfully in all we do. Nothing should destruct us from keeping the covenant. This covenant is the key to our salvation. (Colossians 3:5; Matthew 15:19)
Our salvation is paramount in all things we do, therefore this thought must precede the action we intend to make. The members of the body as outlined, in as much as they form a part of us, we must also consider the company we keep. If our associates draws us away from doing the will of God, then we need to disassociate from them. Keeping a healthy company keeps as in God's purpose for our lives, but bad company corrupts and usurps the purpose of God for our lives. (Proverbs 6:23-29)
Prayer: Dear God, I know I've fallen short of keeping my eyes on You. I've turned many times just to satisfy the desires of my eyes which have ensnared me to doing the abominable in Your sight. Forgive me and heal my eyes, that I may behold Your glory in all that I do. Thank You for saving me. In Christ Jesus' name have I prayed. AMEN!
Amen
