DEVOTION ~ CHRIST FULFILLS THE LAW

Theme: Christ Fulfills the Law
Text: Matthew 5:17-20

17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

Laws are given to guide individuals and a group to abide by the norm of a society or community. God has also given us His laws and commandments to shape us in life. Jesus said, He did not come to destroy the Law or the Prophets but to fulfil them. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. The law is the Word of God, it must be kept well for it abides forever.

Dear beloved in the Lord, we have been causioned that, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven. The Word of God is lamp unto our feet and light to our path, so if we diminish the Word to nothing, we are as well destroying the compass that will guide us to the Father. We will go wayward and our true identity will never be revealed.

However, whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Holding on to the commands of the Lord demonstrate our love for God. It eliminates every form of hypocrisy and self-righteousness in us (the very thing identified amongst the scribes and Pharisees) filling us with the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.

Prayer: Thank You Almighty God for making it easier for us to heed to Your laws and commandments through Christ Jesus. We pray the veil be taken off our eyes to walk with Christ in all humility, diligence and purity through the enablement of the Holy Spirit. This we pray in Jesus' name. AMEN!
