DEVOTION ~ MARRIAGE
Theme: Marriage
Text: Matthew 5:31&32
31 “Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery."
In today's devotion, we will be looking at marriage. Marriage is a sacred union instituted by God. The aim of God for this sacred union is that the two (a man and a woman) becomes one only to be separated by death. However, Moses was given the law that, a man can only issue a certificate of divorce for his wife on the ground that she's unfaithful. (Deuteronomy 24:1)
Divorce is unacceptable before God according to the teaching of Jesus Christ. This is because, divorce brings about adultery. Dear beloved in the Lord, we ought to therefore as believers put measures in place as a family in the Lord to ensure before marriage, the bride and groom are taken through counseling to prepare them well for the journey ahead. Post marriage counseling should also be encouraged in the church to strengthen marriages and heal those that are hurting. (Romans 7:3; 1 Corinthians 7:11)
Another important marriage which we must ensure to keep well for our salvation is the marriage covenant between us and God through Christ Jesus. Let us flee from playing the harlot with idols (prioritizing insignificant things above God or worshipping other gods). May the Lord help us to be faithful in our relationship with Him. (Jeremiah 3:1)
Prayer: Father we invite You to visit every marriage today with Your Hand of unity. May every husband love his wife as You love the church and may every wife submit to her husband as to You. We pray those marriages at the verge of devorce because of pride, bitterness, arrogance, amongst others receive the power of restoration. This we pray for in Christ Jesus our Lord. AMEN!
