DEVOTION ~ HOLD YOUR PEACE

Theme: Hold Your Peace
Text: 2 Samuel 13:19-22

19 Then Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore her robe of many colors that was on her, and laid her hand on her head and went away crying bitterly. 20 And Absalom her brother said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this thing to heart.” So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house. 21 But when King David heard of all these things, he was very angry. 22 And Absalom spoke to his brother Amnon neither good nor bad. For Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

Grief sets the mind and heart in motion either to hold one's peace or not. Tamar put ashes on her head, tore her rope of many colours, laid her hand on her head and went away crying bitterly expressing her grief and sorrow over what Amnon did to her. Dear beloved in the Lord, you need to also do same when your honour is tainted. However, the prophet Joel has given us a precept that's very appropriate in our dispensation; Joel 2:13~ And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Acknowledge your sins and repent its the tool to draw closer to God.

Sympathizing with the grieved and sorrowful helps to ease their pain. Absalom did a great job calming his sister by encouraging her to hold her peace, remembering Amnon is her brother and must be treated as such not as an enemy. It however showed that, despite Absalom's words, he hated Amnon without showing any sign. Let's genuinely forgive if not, evil will consume us to do the ugly. Their father king David did not also help in the matter because, it only showed he was angry but did not punish Amnon for his evil deeds. Parenting or leadership must be carried out with sanctions or punitive measures that serves as deterrent in the home or society.

Prayer: Abba! Father, grant me a forgiving heart to forgive all those who have hurt me in time past. Help me to hold my peace knowing that all things are under Your control. Thank You Holy Spirit for making this possible in name of Jesus. AMEN!
