DEVOTION ~ PRETENCE
Theme: Pretence
Text: 2 Samuel 13:6-10
6 Then Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill; and when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let Tamar my sister come and make a couple of cakes for me in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.” 7 And David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Now go to your brother Amnon’s house, and prepare food for him.” 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was lying down. Then she took flour and kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. 9 And she took the pan and placed them out before him, but he refused to eat. Then Amnon said, “Have everyone go out from me.” And they all went out from him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the bedroom, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them to Amnon her brother in the bedroom.
The deadliest weapon in life is pretentious being. Pretence is an attempt to make something that is not the case appear true. Having hearkened to the ungodly counsel of Jonadad, Amnon acted the evil plot out perfectly before his father. A caring father granted the desire of a pretentious son without questioning him. It's sometimes necessary to push further to know the intent of people.
Tamar did as she was instructed by her father but failed to be vigilant. She had a pure mind towards her brother but that wasn't reciprocated by him. Dear beloved in the Lord, wisdom must play in every step you take. If Tamar had questioned her brother why he wanted everyone out of the room and demanding food in his bedroom, she would have saved her honour. Seek the direction of the Holy Spirit in all you do because, not every demand placed before you could be genuine. It could be meant to destroy you, be on guard for the schemes of the pretentious.
Prayer: Dear God, grant unto me the spirit of descernment to know the times of life. I pray the Holy Spirit to lead me in all my ways that He will guard my steps from the schemes of the pretentious. This I pray for in name of Jesus with thanksgiving. AMEN!
