DEVOTION ~ THE RIGHTFUL FAST

Theme: The Rightful Fast
Text: Isaiah 58:6&7

“Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh?

In yesterday's devotion, we was how wrongly we have been fasting. However we would be looking at the rightful way to fast in today's devotion. We must be careful not to allow our Christian values to be reduced by weights that are of darkness. These weights include unforgiveness, malice, revenge, wickedness, covetousness, selfishness, oppression of people, amongst others. These weights are detestable to God and so must be loosed out of the believer's lifestyle. Embrace the love of Christ in all you do that His nature will reflect more in your deeds.

The love of Christ awakens your conscience to the plight of those hungry as you feel it in the fasting process. It drives you to do good to such people and others in diverse needs. Your fast must be accompanied with charitable deeds like; sharing your food with those hungry, visiting the sick, providing for the needy, caring for the aged, poor, orphans, weak, inmates, amongst other godly deeds. Keep in mind, your charitable deeds must begin from your family and then extend to your neighbors. Neglecting the needs of your family but showing off in public as a philanthropist is a sin. Do not help others neglecting to give a good physical appearance. Do not look wretched but present yourself appealing so it does not appear as though you're in that state of wretchedness because you've decided to do good. Fast rightly as God has instructed and you'll reap great rewards from the Lord.

Prayer: Abba! Father, thank You for teaching me the rightful way to fast. Help me by the enablement of the Holy Spirit to do all these even when I'm not fasting. That my life shall reflect Christ to those around me and draw them closer to You the more. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
