DEVOTION ~ IN-LAW JETHRO
Theme: In-law Jethro
Text: Exodus 18:1-6
18 And Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people—that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back, 3 with her two sons, of whom the name of one was [a]Gershom (for he said, “I have been a stranger in a foreign land”) 4 and the name of the other was Eliezer (for he said, “The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”); 5 and Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped at the mountain of God. 6 Now he had said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.”
Building a lasting marriage is not just dependent on the couples but families play significant roles in either establishing the marriage or destroying it. In the case of Moses, he had a useful father-in-law. Jethro Moses' father-in-law kept the wife and children of Moses safe as Moses was out there to accomplish God's task. Not many in-laws have been good in ensuring marriages run from distance hold. It is to you as a child of God to ensure you help build marriages in your family, church and community.
Having done the needful, Jethro do enquire from people how his son-in-law was doing. It is for that reason he knew the appropriate time to follow up on his son-in-law. Do well to check on your family members, friends and those around you to support them both spiritually and physically. Jethro's visit was announced, likewise must we make good use of technology to pre inform people we will be visiting. If you try to visit someone surprisingly, you will be more surprised to meet an empty house or their absence. Be the Jethro of your family to save marriages.
Prayer: Father You instituted marriage with the intent it last forever and to establish homes out of it. Forgive me for not playing a good role to sustain the marriages in my family, church and community. I pray the Holy Spirit enables me to do the needful in these marriages as You expect from me. In Jesus name have I prayed. AMEN!
Amen!
