DEVOTION ~ A NOTABLE WOMAN
Theme: A Notable Woman
Text: 2 Kings 22:8&9
8 Now it happened one day that Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman, and she persuaded him to eat some food. So it was, as often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food. 9 And she said to her husband, “Look now, I know that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly.
Having ended the story of the widow yesterday, we will be looking at another woman said to be notable. To be notable means worthy of attention, notice or remarkable. It is not achieved be lip services but by actions beyond reasonable doubts. This notable woman of Shunem (Shunammite) is a married woman and has concerns for the prophet Elisha's wellbeing. She has been noted for her hospitality; she persuaded the prophet Elisha to pass by and eat each time he passes by.
Frequent visits often irritate but this woman was able to put up with her regular guest such that it was stated, "So it was, as often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food". Can you just imagine the number of times in a day, week, month not to mention a year? Yet she wasn't disturbed at all, that's noteworthy of a charitable being. What she told her husband shows clearly that, she did not really knew Elisha before being charitable to him; Look now, I know that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly. Our charitable deeds will attract the rightful people to us. What good thing are you noted for? Ask God to help you to identify it and as well grant you humility to do it to perfection. The proud always fall but the humble lifted up.
Prayer: Thank You Most Gracious Father for instructing me with the lesson of the notable Shunammite woman. I pray to receive the spirit of hospitality to be charitable wherever I find myself. Grant me a willing spirit to bless others with what you have blessed me with. This I ask with thanksgiving in the name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
