DEVOTION ~ PRAYER WORKS

Theme: Prayer Works
Text: 2 Kings 4:32-37

32 When Elisha came into the house, there was the child, lying dead on his bed. 33 He went in therefore, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the Lord. 34 And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands; and he stretched himself out on the child, and the flesh of the child became warm. 35 He returned and walked back and forth in the house, and again went up and stretched himself out on him; then the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. 36 And he called Gehazi and said, “Call this Shunammite woman.” So he called her. And when she came in to him, he said, “Pick up your son.” 37 So she went in, fell at his feet, and bowed to the ground; then she picked up her son and went out.

Our weapon in life as Christians is prayer. Prayer has done great things to those who employ it faithfully; the prophet Elijah used prayer to bring back to life the widow's son, Jesus prayed for Lazarus to be resurrected. The first thing the prophet Elisha did was to pray. His prayer was not done openly to attract spectators rather, he shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the Lord. Make use of the closet prayer it breaks barriers. (1 Kings 17:17-23; John 11:41-44; Matthew 6:5-7)

The prophet Elisha might have learnt the technique of stretching on the dead from his master Elijah. His stretching brought warmth into the child for dead things are cold. His act of walking back and forth is to wait on the Lord; some miracles tarry that God's glory will be revealed so don't get discouraged while waiting on the Lord. Let's examine the prophet Elisha's faith at work: He prayed; lay on the child; returned and walked back and forth in the house; and went up to stretch himself out on the child again. Faith goes through process (faith is works). After the process, the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. When our prayer is answered, we need to be grateful to the Lord (she went in, fell at his feet, and bowed to the ground). Do not be quick to pick up your miracle without giving thanks.

Prayer: Dear God, help me understand You're a God of orderliness and process. Teach me how to come before Your presence in prayer, wait on You, and to employ faith even if it makes no reason. Stir in me the spirit of the worshipper that gratitude shall fill my heart in the name of Jesus Christ have I prayed. AMEN!
