CHARACTER STUDY ~ ONESIMUS
Onesimus was a slave in the house of Philemon but became a fugitive after stealing from his master. He served his master in Colossae but fled to Rome so as not to be apprehended. However, while the Apostle Paul was serving in prison awaiting trial with Ceasar, he was spreading the gospel it was during this time that Onesimus encountered him.
Some characteristics of Onesimus
* His name means helpful
* He was a thief making him useless to his master as the Apostle Paul puts it. A bad slave is of no use to the master.
* He became useful after hearing the Gospel. He served Apostle Paul and the other believers in the company of Tychicus.
* The Apostle Paul identified him as his son; “I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains”
* He never messed up his second chance but made good use of it to reconcile with his master.
