DEVOTION ~ GIVE ME JOHN THE BAPTIST'S HEAD
Theme: Give Me John the Baptist's Head
Text: Matthew 14:6-8
6 But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. 7 Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. 8 So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.”
In yesterday's devotion, we learned how the unlawful act of Herod led to adultery, covetousness, and the intent to kill John the Baptist who point his errors to him. In today's devotion, we would learn how some parental decisions can mislead or misguide the decisions of their children. Herod made an oath to give Herodias' daughter anything she asked for. We must learn to have a limit to promises we make before people. Conditions must be well spelled out so that it does not push us to compromise our stance in the Lord.
Every child believes his/her parents will be in the right position to make great choices for their lives and this was what led Herodias' daughter to confide in her mother what she should ask Herod. However, Herodias prompted her daughter to request the head of John the Baptist on a platter. The question is, what will her daughter profit from the head of John the Baptist? Absolutely nothing hopefully we will see what she did with the head tomorrow. In our daily lives, we have been used willfully or unaware to take revenge on people. Ask yourself what action or word have you taken or said to someone that intends to cause harm to please another? Do not allow the dictates of men to influence your decision but rather let the Holy Spirit guide you in all you do. You may not request John the Baptist's head on a platter but may be causing harm to others emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, and mentally. Desist from such acts and live at peace with all.
PRAYER: Dear God, have mercy on me and show me the ways that I live that harm others and stir up in me the spirit of reconciliation. Help me to stay at peace with all people and to please You in all that I do in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
