CHARACTER STUDY ~ TAMAR II

In our previous week's devotion, we mentioned that there are three ladies named Tamar in the Bible: first the daughter-in-law of Judah, second David's daughter, and the third Absalom's daughter. We also learned that Tamar means date palm tree. Today, our focus will be on the daughter of King David.

Some Characteristics of Tamar the Daughter of David:

✔ She was the sister of Absalom and she is said to be fair. She shares the same mother as Absalom and she is a half-sister to Ammon.

✔ She should be a good cook that is why her father will ask her to fix her brother some meal in his house. She personally baked the cakes before her brother. This should teach us to train our children to be responsible irrespective of our status in life. Tamar was a princess yet she could cook.

✔ When her brother wanted to have sexual relations with her, she showed her displeasure and she outlined the consequence of such acts. “No, my brother, do not force me, for no such thing should be done in Israel. Do not do this disgraceful thing! And I, where could I take my shame? And as for you, you would be like one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king; for he will not withhold me from you.” She knew the law concerning sexual sin which implies she was well educated in that regard. As Christians, we need to also give sex education to our children so they are not misled by worldly people.

✔ She was raped by Ammon despite her good counsel because he was stronger than her. Ammon despised her and instructed her to leave his sight. She again gave another good counsel yet not taken by Ammon:  “No, indeed! This evil of sending me away is worse than the other that you did to me.”

✔ Tamar demonstrated an act of pain by putting ash on her head and tearing her robe of many colours. Unfortunately, the young woman could not bounce back to herself. It is said of her that she remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house.

✔ In contrasting her with Judah's daughter-in-law, she allowed her circumstances to define her whereas the other challenged her situation to get heirs for her husband. We need to trust God to see us through our challenges in life for our battles are His and He will give us victory.
