DEVOTION ~ JUDGEMENT GUIDED BY EVIL MOTIVES
Theme: Judgement Guided by Evil Motives
Text: James 2:2-4
2 For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, 3 and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, “You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here at my footstool,” 4 have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
In yesterday's devotion, we learned that we have to avoid partiality as children of God. The text for today gives a perfect example of showing partiality. Most people feel their judgment is perfect but when we see it through the lens of God's Word, we come to the realization that such was guided by evil motives. When we discriminate against the less advantageous, less privileged, poor, orphans, widows, or people with some form of disabilities is an example of unfair judgment.
Giving preference to the rich, famous, noble, and people of high status during events while the poor, weak, and vulnerable are streamlined, fits very well into today's text. The rich and mighty are given better preference because they have what it takes to grace our events and make them more colorful. This means our motives are not to the individuals but their status or wealth and that sure is an evil thought. Even when we claim to be honoring the mighty, we are just looking at the gain which also discriminates to some extent. No wonder, when such individuals lose their wealth and status, we no longer give them a place of honour in our events.
PRAYER: Dear God, help me to avoid judgments with evil thoughts. May the edge to discrimination be broken in my life and may I please You in all that I do and live in harmony with all in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
