CHARACTER STUDY ~ NOAH (DAUGHTER OF ZELOPHEHAD)

Our study today will focus on Noah. There existed two people named Noah in the Bible: the son of Lamech and the daughter of Zelophehad. Our focus today will be on Noah the daughter of Zelophehad then we will look at Lamech's son next week. The name Noah means rest and has its origin from the Hebrew name Noach.

Some Characteristics of Noah:

✔ She is one of the daughters of Zelophehad presumably the second child.

✔ She joined her sisters to fight for the inheritance of their father: "And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying, our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons. Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father".

✔ She was a part of changing the law on inheritance. Despite being daughters, she and her other sisters valued their father's name and demanded lawfully for the portion of the inheritance due him. Violence does not give a permanent solution however, a peaceful resolution does. This was the approach adopted by Noah and her sisters.

✔ God intervened in their request and it was established:  And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “The daughters of Zelophehad speak what is right; you shall surely give them a possession of inheritance among their father’s brothers, and cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them. And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter. If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the relative closest to him in his family, and he shall possess it.’ ” And it shall be to the children of Israel a statute of judgment, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

✔ There has been no record of her after this event. But what we ought to learn from her is to trust God with every challenge that comes our way, seek to resolve issues peacefully, and be patient.
