CHARACTER STUDY ~ SHEM
The name Shem means fame and he was the first son of Noah. He and his siblings and wives were fortunate to be saved by Noah's ark from the flood that destroyed the earth.
Some Characteristics of Shem:
✔ He is believed to be the eldest son of Noah. The constant appearance of his name before his other brothers suggests he is the first child/son of Noah.
✔ He was in the ark with his family. If he were not submissive to his father, he is likely to join the rest who never believed Noah. He would have perished.
✔ He respected his father even when he was unconscious. In his father's drunken state, he did not look at his father's nakedness but rather covered him. This teaches us to give honour to the aged/elderly in our homes, community, and nation. It is unwise to desire to mock the nakedness of the elderly.
✔ His father's blessings upon his life were: “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant. May God enlarge Japheth, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem; And may Canaan be his servant.”
✔ The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. Shem was one hundred years old when he begot Arphaxad two years after the flood. After he begot Arphaxad, Shem lived five hundred years and begot sons and daughters.
✔ His generation can be traced down to Jesus Christ.
✔ It is believed the years of Shem on earth is five hundred. There are no records of his burial.
