CHARACTER STUDY ~ HIGH PRIEST AHIMELECH




The name Ahimelech means brother of the King. He was a high priest during the reign of King Saul and a friend to David son of Jesse. He was the son of Ahitub and the father of Abiathar. 


Some Characteristics of Ahimelech the High Priest: 

✔ He fed David and his companions with the Showbread ensuring first they had not defiled themselves to provoke the wrath of God. We ought to learn from him not to desecrate the things of God. We must keep the sacred and holy things of God as they ought to be. 

✔ He gave the sword of Goliath the Philistine to David. When asked about weapons he sincerely made known to David the only available weapon belonged to Goliath whom he killed.    

✔ He was killed by King Saul. Doeg the Edomite reported him to King Saul to have aided David. The King became furious and asked his men to kill the priest and his father's household but they could not because he was a priest of the Lord. However, when the King instructed Doeg the Edomite to kill the priests he did. 

✔ Jesus referred to his assistance to David to explain the essence of the laws of God in  Mark 2:26
