CHARACTER STUDY ~ JOHN SON OF ZEBEDEE

The name John is a male Hebrew name which means "God is gracious." He was a disciple of Jesus Christ. His parents were Zebedee and Salome. His brother was James. He and his brother were nicknamed Boanerges which means the sons of thunder. He was a close associate of Jesus and often referred to as the disciple whom Jesus loved.

Some Characteristics of John the son of Zebedee:

✔ He was present when Jesus performed significant miracles such as the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law, blind, lame, and other forms of health and spiritual issues, and the resuscitation of Lazarus and the daughter of Jairus. We will experience miracles if we have a closer walk with Christ.

✔ He experienced the analogy of becoming fishers of men when Christ caused them to have a great harvest of fish. We are called to harvest souls for the Kingdom of God through evangelism.

✔ He was not tolerable to others performing miracles in the Name of Jesus who were not a part of them. His displeasure has given room for Jesus to address the issue and to educate them on how it will aid in the advancement of the Kingdom.

✔ His mother pleaded with the Lord to grant them honor in the Kingdom of God. In some of the synopsis too, it was stated he and his brother pleaded for this honor. We should not be over-ambitious to forget our place in the Lord.

✔ He experienced the transfiguration of the Lord. A close walk with God will open our heavens for us and we shall encounter God daily.

✔ He prepared and ate the Last Supper with the Lord. We must dine with the Lord by partaking in the Eucharist. We obtain strength and power by taking the Eucharist.

✔ He was at the Garden of Gethsemane but could not stay awake to pray with the Lord because his body was weak although his spirit was willing. This teaches us to take our health and spiritual lives seriously. There must always be a correct balance between the two at all times.

✔ He followed through the arrest, trial, crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He stood by Jesus as a true friend throughout Jesus’ grief and so Jesus handed the care of His mother to him. He also encountered the risen Christ.

✔ He performed his apostolic role to the latter. He was with Peter when the lame man was healed at the Beautiful Gate. He was imprisoned by the Rulers of the Jews; he was sent with Peter by the Jerusalem congregation to Samaria when they heard of their faith. He wrote the Gospel of John the three Epistles of John, and the Book of Revelation when he received the apocalyptic vision from Patmos Island. It is believed his life came to an end at Patmos Island after surviving being boiled in hot oil.
