DEVOTION ~ LORD OF THE SABBATH
Theme: Lord of the Sabbath
Text: Mark 2:27&28
27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
In yesterday's devotion, we established that if we claim to abide by the laws of God but fail to meet God's intent for the law, then it is of no use. Jesus' statement in the text for consideration gives a summarized opinion of all we have looked at in previous devotions concerning His disciples violating the law of the Sabbath. The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath reveals that the Sabbath is meant to serve human needs of having a closer fellowship with God. This is where the legalistic Pharisees miss the mark as their laid-down principles do not conform to what God desires the Sabbath to be for mankind. The act of Ahimelech in yesterday's devotion demonstrates what it means the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. Do good on the Sabbath and seek the well-being of others, this is what God requires of us if we want to have a lasting relationship with Him: Love God and His creation.
The second part of the statement says the Son of Man is also the Lord of the Sabbath. If Christ is the Lord of the Sabbath and does not condemn his disciples, what right had the Pharisees to do so? The Lord of the Sabbath is giving us a wake-up call to put an end to condemning others outside the will of God under the pretense of tradition. More churches are springing forth daily but not deeply rooted in the purpose of God. The body of Christ cannot grow deeper spiritual roots if we continue to allow the dictates of human philosophy to override God's purpose for the church.
PRAYER: Thank You, God, that Christ is the Lord of the Sabbath and the Sabbath is made for man not man for the Sabbath. Have Your way in me and transform me to project Your will above mine no matter what it takes or will cost me. This I ask in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
