EASTER DECLARATION ~ ABANDONMENT

Theme: Abandonment

Text: Matthew 27:46 or Mark 15:34

46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

In yesterday's devotion, we learned that Jesus entrusted the care of His mother to John to encourage us to relate well with all irrespective of our diversity. Today's devotion is on Christ's abandonment on the cross which was recorded in the Gospel of Matthew and Mark. About the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” This outcry of Christ at that time to those standing watching was a cry calling on Elijah for help. However, the Lord was rather expressing His disconnection from God due to the sins of the world He bore on the cross. At that moment, the innocent was suffering while the wicked watched which is a perfect complaint by the prophet Habakkuk in Habakkuk 1 verse 13 "But you are pure and cannot stand the sight of evil. Will you wink at their treachery? Should you be silent while the wicked swallow up people more righteous than they?" For the sake of our salvation, there was a temporal disconnection with the Father. God has permitted His only Begotten Son to suffer on the cross. This word of Christ also has a relation with the suffering servant in Psalm 22 verse 1  confirming Jesus as the suffering Servant. The abandonment of Jesus on the cross must not be in vain in our lives but rather we need to show in deeds and in words that we abide in Christ in He in us.

Let us Pray: Almighty God, thank You for the grace to connect to You through Christ Jesus. It is written, what can separate us from the love of God? Absolutely nothing, because Christ has cried out “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” on our behalf that we may never have a disconnection with the Father. I declare I am perpetually connected to the Father in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
