DEVOTION ~ THE TRANCE
Theme: The Trance
Text: Acts 10:10-12
10 Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 11 and saw heaven open and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.
In our previous devotion, we learned that at the hour of prayer, Peter went to the rooftop to pray. The text for today follows that at that time, he was starving, and while he awaited the food to be served, he fell into a trance. The physical hunger of the apostle Paul provided a spiritual provision in the trance. However, on this sheet are all the unclean animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. It is written of these creatures that they must not be eaten for they defile a man and make him unclean. Why then will such animals be offered on a great sheet bound at the four corners and be let down to the earth where an apostle of Jesus Christ is? The insight of this trance will be well elaborated in subsequent devotion.
What we need to focus on today is how God can provide for us in bizarre circumstances. Why would spiritual food be made available for a man who is hungry physically? A twist to this is in the Gospel of Luke chapter five verses one to eleven where the disciples had toiled all night without catching any fish only to let down their net as instructed by Jesus and they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. The Lord's response to Peter's fear was “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” Although these young men were going about their normal business, the Lord called them demonstrating what they should expect in following Him. We see a similar thing at play in the trance where a physical hunger attracts a spiritual provision for satisfaction.
Let us Pray: Almighty God, I pray You to speak to me in supernatural ways like how the apostle Paul had a trance of the sheet. Grant me understanding and guide me to do Your will. This I ask in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
