DEVOTION ~ THE TESTIMONY ABOUT JESUS
Theme: The Testimony About Jesus
Text: 1 John 5:6
6 This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness because the Spirit is truth.
In the previous devotion, we learned that anyone who believes in Jesus is a child of God possesses a love for all, and is also an overcomer. The text for today gives an account of who Jesus is. It is written that every fact shall be sustained and confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses. In revealing who Jesus is, three testimonies are credited to His identity: water, blood, and the Spirit. The first testimony about Christ is revealed by water during His baptism at the Jordan when the Spirit of God came down like a dove and settled upon Him and the heaven was opened and a voice spoke saying "This is my Beloved child in whom I AM well pleased". John pointed to Him to be the Messiah whom He prepared the way for (Refer to Matthew 3:13-17).
The second testimony is evident in His Blood shed on the Cross of Calvary at Golgotha. The Blood of Jesus parted the curtain of the temple and was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open for the bodies of many holy people who had died to be raised to life. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” (Refer to Matthew 27:50-54) The final testimony is the Spirit. The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy declared through the prophets long ago before it was established. The utterance of the Spirit is of truth and so whatever He foretold of the Messiah, manifested accordingly from His birth, life ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension. Jesus Himself assures the disciples of the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of truth that will lead them into all truth and the knowledge of Him (Refer to Isaiah 9; John 14:15-18; 16:5-15).
Let us Pray: Thank You, God, that there is no contention against the true identity of Christ because of the testimonies of the water, Blood, and Spirit. Stir up in me an absolute faith in Him as my Messiah and to look up to Him as my Saviour and Lord. This I ask in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
