CHARACTER STUDY ~ AMOS
The name Amos means burden bearer and he was from the Judean village of Tekoa and was sent to deliver the message of God to the King of Israel.
Some Characteristics of Amos:
✔ Amos was a shepherd and a farmer when God called him to proclaim His message. The ministry of the prophet Amos reveals that God can use anyone to proclaim His Word. Amos was not called because he was qualified but rather, God called Amos, who accepted the call, and God prepared him for what was to come.
✔ Amos when mocked for trying to make ends meet through prophecy, confessed that he was not a prophet, nor was he a son of a prophet, but was a sheep breeder and a tender of sycamore fruit before the Lord took him, and the Lord said to him, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’
✔ The main theme in Amos's message is “judgment is coming due to sin.” We ought to learn to in a dispensation where many no longer see the need to be morally upright to boldly talk about it and lead people to the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
✔ Amos had five visions from God which included: A swarm of locusts; A great fire sent by God; A crooked wall being measured using a plumbline; A basket full of ripe fruits/summer fruits; and the destruction of the alter / temple.
✔ Amos' prophesies went to both the Gentile nations and the Jewish nation. We must also propagate the Gospel to both Christians and non-Christians. Reach out to all and let them know anyone who believes shall be saved.
