CHARACTER STUDY ~ KING JEHU

There were about five different people named Jehu in the bible: one was a prophet, the other a king, there was also a son of Obed named Jehu, Joshebia also named his son Jehu, and finally there existed a Benjamite called Jehu. Our study shall be focused on the King of Israel. Jehu is a masculine name of Hebrew origin meaning “He is God.”

Some Characteristics of King Jehu:

✔ King Jehu was the son of Nimshi a descendant of Jehoshaphat. He was one of the commanders of the army of Israel.

✔ Jehu was anointed king of Israel at Ramoth Gilead by one of the sons of the prophets as instructed by prophet Elisha. He received a divine prophecy to kill and wipe out the dynasty of Ahab which he fulfilled. He also killed all who worshipped idols in a strategically planned plot by proclaiming a solemn assembly in the temple of Baal. In whatever capacity you serve in your family, congregation, community, or nation desire to know the purpose God has in mind for giving you such an opportunity.

✔ Although Jehu began on a good sheet in his reign, he ended it badly. Jehu did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin, that is, from the golden calves that were at Bethel and Dan. Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart. The period that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years. Daily ask the Lord to renew your mind with the truth and increase your faith.

✔ Jehu's action of doing away with idolaters in Israel, pleased the Lord. The Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in doing what is right in My sight, and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart, your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.” It is good to do the Lord's will.

✔  Hazael King of Syria invaded Jehu's territory because the Lord began to cut off parts of Israel. The territories from the Jordan eastward: all the land of Gilead—Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh—from Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, including Gilead and Bashan were invaded by Hazael.

✔ Jehu rested with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place.
