CHARACTER STUDY ~ PROPHET HOSEA
The name Hosea means 'salvation', 'he saves', or 'he helps'. He was a prophet of the Living God and he was instructed by God to take a harlot for a wife which he obeyed. Hosea was the son of Beeri. He received the message of God in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.
Some Characteristics of Hosea:
✔ Hosea married Gomer the daughter of Diblaim who was a prostitute as God instructed him to do. The scenario of this marriage is to illustrate how the children of God have gone after other gods. Never question God when He commands you to do something even if it seems unwise. There is a purpose for that.
✔ Hosea had three children and God used their names to communicate His intent toward the Israelites. Their names were Jezreel, Lo-Ruhamah, and Lo-Ammi which means vengeance, not pitied, and not my people respectively. Names have significance in our lives, we ought to be mindful of the kind of names we call ourselves or children.
✔ Hosea's message to Israel is to repent and seek the mercies of God. We must learn to reach out to people and let them know of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
✔ Hosea's unfailing love for his wife showed how God loved us for while we were still sinners, Christ died for us so that we may be saved.
✔ There is no record of the death of the prophet Hosea in the Bible but is likely to be in other Jewish records.
