CHARACTER STUDY ~ KING AMAZIAH

In last week's devotion, we learned that the name Amaziah means "Jehovah makes mighty; the Lord protects; strength of Jehovah". We looked at the priest Amaziah last week but we will focus on the King of Judah for our study today.

Some Characteristics of King Amaziah:

✔ Amaziah was the son of King Joash of Judah and his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. He began to reign in the second year of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel at age twenty-five. He reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem.

✔ Amaziah did what was right in the sight of God although not as David did. We should use our position in society or the workplace to bring honour to God.

✔ As soon as Amaziah had firm control over the kingdom, he executed the officials who had killed his father, the former king. But he didn’t execute their children. He obeyed the Lord’s command written in the Book of Moses’ Teachings: “Parents must never be put to death for the crimes of their children, and children must never be put to death for the crimes of their parents. Each person must be put to death for his own crime.”

✔ Amaziah killed ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, took Sela by war, and called its name Joktheel to this day. God can give us victory in our battles.

✔ Amaziah gave room for pride to ruin his reign as he called for war between him and the King of Israel. Jehoash king of Israel cautioned him to resist it but failed to listen. He was captured by Jehoash who later took all the silver, gold, and articles that were found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king’s house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria. We must learn to discern and hearken to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

✔ Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel. God can be merciful to us and grant us life everlasting in Christ Jesus.

✔ The people of Judah formed a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish, but they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there. Then they brought Amaziah on horses, and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the City of David.
