CHARACTER STUDY ~ SONS OF SCEVA

The sons of Sceva were only mentioned in chapter nineteen of the Acts of the Apostles. Although their names were never mentioned, they were seven brothers from the same father.

Some Characteristics of the Sons of Sceva:

√ Sceva, a Jewish chief priest was the father of these brothers. Although a Jewish chief priest, his seven sons failed to learn from him. These brothers were clearly extorting from the vulnerable until they were disarmed by the evil spirit that attacked them.

√ The sons of Sceva were amongst the  itinerant Jewish exorcists who took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” Until you connect to the Lord, you cannot employ His Name effectively. Do not call on the Name of the Lord in vain.

√ The sons of Sceva were attacked by a demonic spirit that questioned their spiritual status: “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” Then the man in whom the evil spirit was, leaped on them, overpowered them and prevailed against them so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. Never embark on a spiritual exercise without the Holy Spirit.

√ The plight of the sons of Sceva stirred the fear of God in the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus teaching them to honour God wholeheartedly.

√ Another significant thing to note about the plight of the sons of Sceva is that the Word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed because the magicians brought their books to be burnt. God can bring transformation through weird circumstances.
