DEVOTION ~ IRRESPONSIBLE LIVING
Theme: Irresponsible Living
Text: Genesis 38:8-10
8 And Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went into his brother’s wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did displeased the Lord; therefore He killed him also.
Yesterday's devotion taught us that wickedness ruins as evident in the life of Er. The text for today is a continuation of the life of the sons of Judah. As custom demands, if a man dies without having a child, his brother is to sleep with the widow and make heirs for his late brother. However, Onan was reluctant to impregnate his brother's wife but ready to have sexual pleasure with her. The act of Onan can also be classified as wickedness. He felt uneasy about providing an heir to his late brother but never felt so in his sexual gratification this is why the Lord killed him too. Dear beloved in the Lord, failing to carry out your obligations well or doing it for selfish gain other than to benefit all is also sinful. Whenever you're pushed to act cynically, remember Onan and what became of him. Be responsible and God shall bless you greatly.
Let us Pray: Almighty God, forgive me for living irresponsibly in my marriage, nurturing of children, career, ministry, and all other spheres of my life. Please have mercy on me and graciously order my steps. This I ask in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
