CHARACTER STUDY ~ ABIGAIL

Our character for study today shall be Abigail. There are two known women in the Bible named Abigail. One is the Mother of Amasa, a sister to David, and the other is the wife of Nabal, who later married King David. Our focus today will be on the latter. The name Abigail means "father of exaltation" in Hebrew but is commonly taken to mean "my father's joy" or "my father is joy."

Some Characteristics of Abigail:
√ Abigail was the wife of Nabal a scoundrel. She later married David after the death of Nabal.

√ Abigail is said to be beautiful and intelligent. Beauty should not be defined solely by physical appearance but also by intelligence to make one outstanding.

√ Abigail swiftly saved her home when she heard her husband had disrespected David's men. Her timely intervention calmed David, and he did not carry out what he intended to do to Nabal.

√ David praised Abigail for her swift action saying: "Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you to meet me today! Thank God for your good sense! Bless you for keeping me from murder and from carrying out vengeance with my own hands".

√ Abigail bore David a son called Chileab also known as Daniel.

√ Abigail was taken captive when the Amalekites invaded Ziklag. She and the other women were rescued by David and his men. God can intervene in any situation to set you free so call on Him.

√ There's no record of the Death of Abigail in the Bible although other Christian literature might have it.
