CHARACTER STUDY ~ REBECCA

Rebecca is a Hebrew name for girls which means to tie, to bind, or to secure. She was the daughter of Bethuel and a sister to Laban. She comes from Abraham's family as his niece. She married Isaac the son of his uncle Abraham.

Some Characteristics of Rebecca:
√ Rebecca is described as beautiful, of marrying age, and a virgin. She did not allow her beauty and her age to corrupt her to fornicate. She kept herself well and every child of God must emulate that.

√ Rebecca was generous to Eliezer, her uncle Abraham's servant. Her generous life also displayed how hardworking she was, giving water to camels until they had had enough.

√ Eliezer compensated Rebecca with a gold ring for her nose and two large gold bracelets for her wrists. If we work hard, we will get a great reward.

√ Rebecca gave Eliezer an assurance of getting a place at her father's house and he was welcomed in because she spoke to her family.

√ Rebecca agreed to marry Isaac and followed the servant the next day to a land far from home. May God guide us in our marital decisions and other spheres of life.

√ Rebecca's husband Isaac prayed for her to take seed. She conceived and had two sons. There was a struggle between the two children in her womb so she inquired from the Lord why this was happening. God revealed the future of these children to her. The sons were Esau and Jacob.

√ Rebecca is said to love Jacob because of his quiet temperament and stayed home than his brother Esau. In parenting, we must be careful not to over prefer a child over the other.

√ Isaac her husband deceived Abimelech that she was his sister. However, Abimelech saw the couple caressing and questioned. A warning was later given that no harm be caused to the couple.

√ Rebecca was never pleased with the Hittite wives of her son Esau. She also influenced Jacob to take a wife from her kindred.

√ Rebecca outwitted her husband to bless Jacob instead of Esau. She also aided Jacob to travel to his uncle Laban.

√ Rebecca died and was buried in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite at Canaan.
