CHARACTER STUDY ~ JAEL

Jael is a Hebrew girl's name meaning "mountain goat" or "Climber". She was the wife of Heber the Kenite. She killed Sisera, a commander of the army of King Jabin of Hazor.

Some Characteristics of Jael:
√ Jael acted wisely when she had the opportunity with Sisera. She cheerfully welcomed him into her tent. If she had acted or shown any sign of attacking Sisera, she would have been killed. Let us learn to apply wisdom in all circumstances.

√ Jael was hospitable to her guest. She gave him milk instead of water. Her generous act made Sisera trust her. She showed, without any reason to doubt, that she was protecting Sisera.

√ Jael killed an army commander with a hammer and a tent peg. Having lured her victim to sleep, she struck him dead. Although her reason for killing Sisera was not given, it is likely that his abuse of women after the war might have influenced her act (Refer to Judges 5:28-30).

√ Jael avail herself of God's use of her to bring an end to Sisera. The prophetess Deborah prophesied that the Lord's victory over Sisera would be in the hand of a woman.

√ Jael invited Barak into her tent to see the dead Sisera. In Deborah's song, she was praised for her bravery.
