CHARACTER STUDY ~ SARAH
Our study shall focus on Sarah, Abraham's wife. She was originally known as Sarai, which means "Palace, Master, Princess, and Releaser." The Lord changed her name and that of her husband. The new name became Sarah, which means "Princess."
Some Characteristics of Sarah:
√ Sarah was a humble wife. She followed her husband everywhere the Lord directed them to go. Submissiveness and obedience build a home.
√ Sarah was a good cook and hospitable. When the angels visited her husband, Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.”
√ Sara was her husband's half-sister. Abraham introduced Sarah as his sister to King Abimelech of Gerar, for fear of being killed. However, the Lord warned Abimelech in a dream, and he returned Sarah to Abraham as his wife with compensation.
√ The Lord chose Sarah to be the mother of Abraham's promised child. The Lord said unto Abraham, "But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year".
√ Sarah acted contrary to God's purpose. She gave her maid Hagar to her husband to have a child with him. We should learn to wait on the Lord rather than jumping to conclusions. Later she had to send the maid and his son out of her home.
√ Sarah doubted God's promise and laughed about conceiving in her old age. She even denied laughing when asked because she was afraid. Let us hold on to God's promises concerning our lives, and we shall reap the harvest.
√ Sarah conceived and gave birth to Isaac in her old age. Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”
√ Sarah lived a hundred and twenty-seven years old and died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her. Afterwards, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
