CHARACTER STUDY ~ OMRI

Omri is a boy's name of Hebrew origin that can be interpreted as “pupil or servant of the Lord,” “bound by Yah,” and “the Lord is my life." He was an army commander and king of Israel. He did what was evil in the sight of God.

Some Characteristics of Omri:
√ Omri was an army commander of Israel until Zimri committed treason by killing King Elah. The Israelites proclaim him as king over Israel in their camp. The lesson to learn from this is that God can uplift us when we least expect it. Omri never thought of becoming a king; he became one by God's grace.

√ Omri had to contest the kingship with Tibni, whom a fraction of the Israelites chose as king instead of Omri. It is recorded that the men of Omri proved stronger than those of Tibni, so he was killed in battle, and Omri became king. A lesson from this is that sometimes we must prove our worth to possess our possessions.

√ Omri was the sixth king of the northern kingdom of Israel. He became king in the twenty-seventh year of King Asa's reign in the southern kingdom of Judah.

√ Omri bought a land from Shemer for two talents of silver, and he fortified the hill and called it Samaria after Shemer, the owner of the hill. The lesson here is that we should be willing to sacrifice. Omri paid for the land, whereas Shemer sold his property to the king. Samaria is a known city in history.

√ Omri did what was evil in the sight of God even more than any king before him. His evil was leading Israel into idolatry. The lesson from this is that the Lord detests idolatry and will not be pleased with anyone who promotes it.

√ Omri was the father of King Ahab, who succeeded him. The dynasty of Omri lasted four generations before God judged their evil deeds and brought an end to Omri's royal lineage. The lesson here is that there's a price to pay for every action we take

√ Omri reigned for twelve years as king over Israel. He died and was buried with his fathers.
