CHARACTER STUDY ~ ELIPHAZ
Eliphaz means "God shines in strength", "God is fine gold" or "The endeavour of God". Two individuals were known by the name Eliphaz: one was the son of Esau by Adah, and the other a friend of Job. We shall focus on Job's friend. Eliphaz is a Temanite of Edom.
Some Characteristics of Eliphaz:
√ Eliphaz and two other friends, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, came to visit their friend Job when they learn of his devastating predicament. It is good to console with others and be empathetic.
√ Eliphaz was the first to break the silence during the visit and initiated a conversation amongst the four friends. He combined traditional wisdom and personal experience to question Job's integrity. His notion was that Job's situation might be a result of sin, for the righteous do not suffer without cause. Therefore, he suggested that Job repent so God can restore him. A lesson from Eliphaz's statement has a blend of truth and lies: It is not always that suffering is associated with sin. The Lord Jesus suffered not because He sinned but to deliver us from sin. We must be mindful of how quick we are to draw conclusions.
√ Eliphaz's second speech was to point out to Job that his words claiming to be innocent condemn him. He also highlighted the futility of those who oppose God because he believed Job might have offended God in some way. We are not to judge or condemn others because God searches the heart, and He knows everyone very well.
√ Eliphaz's third and final speech accuses Job of not being charitable: Not feeding the hungry and giving water to the thirsty. Dear beloved, it is good to be generous for whatever we do to others, we do it unto God.
√ Eliphaz and the other friends were rebuked by God for not speaking what is right about Him. Eliphaz was divinely instructed to offer a burnt offering, after which Job prayed for him.
