DEVOTION ~ CORBAN: A GIFT TO GOD

Theme: Corban ~ A Gift to God
Text: Mark 7:10-13
10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God), 12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, 13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

Previous devotion has taught us that the religious leaders were more concerned with observing the traditions of men instead of obedience to God's laws. In today's text, Jesus gave an example of how they twist the law of God to pave the way for their tradition. Dear beloved in the Lord, most people have neglected their aged ones to their fate, all in the name of Corban, which is a gift to God. Your generosity towards the aged attracts many blessings than fulfilling Corban. Jesus said that once we fail to help the least of our brothers, we fail to help Him instead. If we fail to assist the aged or needy all in the name of giving God a gift, then we are making the Word of God of no effect through our traditions, which have been handed down to us. Plan to help the poor and needy as much as you present your gifts to God.

Let us Pray: Almighty God, forgive me for choosing to obey the tradition of men rather than Your law. Please help me to reach out to the poor and needy even as I bring my gifts to Your presence. This I ask in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
