DEVOTION ~ DEFYING THE ODDS

Theme: Defying the Odds
Text: Mark 7:27-30
27 But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” 28 And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.” 29 Then He said to her, “For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” 30 And when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed.

Yesterday's devotion taught us that a Greek woman came to Jesus asking Him to cast out a demon in her daughter. Today's text is an account of what transpired afterwards. The faith of this desperate mother was tested, and she didn't allow ego to take the best part of her. Instead, she gave a reply that mesmerised the Lord. Knowing too well that the Greeks are never regarded by the Jews, she was ready to face the challenge. Let's cast our minds to David and Goliath: The giant Goliath asked David if he was a dog that came to attack him with such weapons. The children referred to here are the Jews, and the dogs the Gentiles.

The woman responded that, by the children's little cramps that fall under the table, the little dogs also feed. This implies that when God blesses His children, it also locates the outsiders. Indeed, God's rain, sunshine, weather changes and other things fall for both the children of God and those that are not. She only made this revelation because she had faith that a solution to the daughter's predicament had been found. Amazingly, her daughter was healed because she believed in the power of God's infinite mercy. Dear beloved in the Lord, shake off your fears and doubt and trust God to do the unimaginable in your life.

Let us Pray: Almighty God, rain your blessings of healing over my life, family, and the land of our birth and where we reside in your mercy. May everything turn out for our good in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
