DEVOTION ~ LIFE'S CONTRAST

Theme: Life's Contrast
Text: Ecclesiastes 7:1
7 A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one’s birth

The book of Ecclesiastes is ascribed to King Solomon, whom the book addresses as the preacher. With all his wisdom, he has seen how life can be so contrasting. In today's text, the preacher made two profound statements. One, he states that a good name is better than precious ointments. The value of ointment is priceless when one is injured. It provides brief relief and soothes. This precious ointment could also be referred to as costly perfume. The sweet-scented perfume gives an aura, but that's also temporal. However, a good name is a lasting honour. We must strive to obtain a good name rather than temporal recognition.

The second statement stated that the day of death is better than the day of one's birth. Birth brings joy; however, the infant is sure to suffer the injustice of society with time. On the other hand, death culminates the physical woes. As believers in Christ, for us to live is Christ and to die is gain. Death is the beginning of our glorious life in Christ Jesus. It brings an end to the pain and injustice of the physical world, drawing us closer to the Almighty God. Let us draw nearer to God in all we do while we are alive so that when we die, our hopes will not be shattered.

Let us Pray: Almighty God, grant me a good name in obedience to Your Word. Direct me in truth so that when You call me home, I shall rejoice entering into Your Kingdom. This I ask in the Name of Jesus Christ. AMEN!
